Synesthesia Writing Exercises

Have you ever heard of synesthesia?
It's when one mixes up the senses, basically. For example: "A wolf's howl tastes like the rain" mixes sound and taste, "That song was a sweet-smelling rose" mixes sound and smell, "Your shirt is loud today" combines sight and sound, and so on. I remember a time when I was in a writing group and we did a great exercise that used just this. We were each given two senses to use (out of sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell) and were to create a sentence like the previous two. It was fun, and very helpful. So, if you want to improve your writing and stretch your brain, I suggest giving this a try!

I don't know what this is...

...but it just came into my head.

Is this a dying world, or a beginning?
I feel that I stand on the threshold; of what, I don't know.
I know not what I'm entering.
I don't know what I'm leaving.
But I do know that it is something, and I'm sad to leave this thing behind.
It is a mystery, what I walk away from, or into. But I know I won't find out what's ahead
unless I step forward.

Cool Word

Like I said, I'll be posting pretty much anything that has to do with writing. That said, I found a really neat-sounding word today: Quotidian. It simply means something that occurs every day, something that's diurnal, commonplace, ordinary.
Yay!

What My Novel is About

I suppose I ought to describe to you the plot of my story. Do please remember that my book is officially copyrighted, so don't be rude and steal it. Thanks.

Basically it follows the lives of the three friends Jessie, Janey and Ander, ages 12 and 13. They are ordinary--or maybe not so ordinary--kids living ordinary preteen lives. They hang out together, engage in extracurricular activities, and worry about homework. One day they investigate a strange glow in the forest just outside their school, and once they get too close, they are sucked into the trees and suddenly transported to a parallel universe. There, they try to figure out how to return back to school, but are unsuccessful. Then they meet a strange but kind girl, who offers to help them return home. As they are in her company, Jessie gets kidnapped by pirates, which the others do not notice until it is too late. She was taken to a pirate ship, and it is up to Janey, Ander, and their new friend to rescue her. On their journey they experience the many wonders of this new world they are in. Can they find Jessie and finally return home?

That is a basic outline of what happens. There are quite a few plot elements and twists, other characters, and mysterious happenings that take place in this world, but I want to be careful and not reveal too many of them here. If you are a friend of mine, ask me and I will send you a copy of the book to read! If not, you are going to have to wait until I get published.  :)
